Southern Manitoba will once again see a beautiful weekend, a southerly flow will be in place ahead of a large area of low pressure boosting temperatures and bringing calm conditions. Get ready however there will be a paradoxical weather situation coming up for the latter half of the weekend. Find out more below .
Saturday: A large area of low pressure developing in Saskatchewan will allow a southerly flow to filter in. The day Will start off partly cloudy, with some areas in the southeast seeing mostly cloudy skies in the morning. Any left over cloud should burn off towards the afternoon. Temperatures will soar into the low to mid teens, (10 to 16C) cooler temperatures are forecast in areas of southeastern Manitoba closer to 10C. Heading into the overnight period, a large area of cloud will filter in as the low pressure system I mentioned slides south into North Dakota. This system will then slide into Ontario by morning. Mainly clear skies are expected for the rest of the region. 😊. Overnight low temperatures will drop into the low to mid single digits, with a patchy area in the red river valley seeing lows in and around 0C. A few areas might get a degree or 2 below zero as well. Day: Winnipeg: Sunny high 15C. Brandon: Sunny high 17C. Dauphin: Sunny high 18C.
Night: Winnipeg: A few clouds low +2C. Brandon: Partly cloudy low +2C. Dauphin: Partly cloudy low 3C.
Sunday: The weather paradox begins, A large trough behind an area of low pressure will begin to usher in unsettled weather. This same system is prompting the special weather statements in much of Manitoba at the moment. How does the paradox begin??!! During the day Sunday cloud cover will thicken and spread in from northwestern Ontario. There will be a section in South Central Manitoba where the sun may be able to peak out in the afternoon. The main unsettled Weather will not occur until overnight Sunday into Monday. Temperatures for a majority of south Manitoba will be in the mid to high single digits (4 to 10C), with the exception of South Central Manitoba seeing temperatures in the low teens (10 to 12C). This system will then start bringing precipitation into southeastern portions of Manitoba moving west throughout the overnight period.
Main action begins Sunday Night: The precipitation associated with this system will start as rain in southeastern Manitoba around 3-5pm making it towards Brandon in the early evening hours. A full transition turning over to snow, is expected by 6pm. The exception being areas of the interlakes and the parklands where snow will start at 3-5pm. The thing about this system is that heavy wet snow will likely fall because the temperatures will be close to the 0C mark, warmer temperatures often hold more moisture. Looking at snow fall totals it looks like Interlake, parklands regions of Manitoba will see upwards of 10 cm of snow, and areas for the south central and south east and southwest regions will see upwards of 5 to 10 cm of snow. There will also be a likelihood for snow and blowing snow in open areas and the rural regions of the province. Overnight low temperatures will drop into the low minus single digits, 0 to -6°C.
Daytime: Winnipeg: Mainly Sunny, increasing clouds late in the afternoon. High 9C. Brandon: Mainly cloudy high 9C. Dauphin: Mainly cloudy high 8C.
Nighttime: Winnipeg: Rain or snow, amount 5 to 10cm. Low -2C. Brandon: Periods of rain or snow low -4C. Dauphin: Periods of snow low -5C.
Monday: This is where the paradox gets a little bit tricky, snow looks to continue throughout the entire day on Monday with the likelihood of blowing snow and near zero visibilities across the province. Accumulating snow amounts look to be in the range of 20 to 30 cm in the Interlakes particularly over the Manitoba lakes. And then areas along the line south of Highway, #1 should be in the 10 to 20 cm range. With varying amounts over different regions. Winnipeg: Snowfall amounts 15 to 20cm. Brandon: 15 to 20cm. Dauphin: 20 to 30cm. Amounts subject to change!
Monday Day: Winnipeg: Snow and blowing snow, high -1C. Snowfall amount: 5 to 10cm. Brandon: Snow and blowing snow amount 5 to 10cm. High -4C. Dauphin: Snow and blowing snow, amount 10 to 15cm. High -4C.
Good thing to note is that most of the snow should melt on contact with the temperatures being above zero in areas. Temperatures for the day on Monday in south eastern areas of Manitoba will see highs in the low single digits zero to 3C as well as the freezing line just west of Elie into southwestern Manitoba where temperatures will drop into the low minus single digits (0 to -5C).
Heading into the latter half of the first half of the week it appears that the system will drift off into Ontario allowing for a gradual return to normal temperatures. It may take us a couple of days to see temperatures near 10C. However we desperately need this moisture!!
Updates on this to follow , on Manitoba weather centre and in the comments section.
