Storm System Set to Bring Significant Rain and The Seasons First Snowfall to The Red River Valley And Parts Of South Eastern Manitoba Tonight Through Until Thursday Night

A major storm system has developed this afternoon over the eastern Dakotas and is forecasted to track across regions of Northern Minnesota tonight into areas of NW Ontario Tomorrow. This system is ready to bring the most significant precipitation to the Red River Valley and SE Manitoba in several weeks, and the moisture will be extremely helpful for all who has suffered from this dry weather. Rob from Rob's Blog is mentioning anywhere from 10 to 50 mm of precipitation with this system, from now through until Thursday Night. There will be one problem with this storm system and that is the fact that some of the moisture may fall as (frozen water droplets) in the form of "snow" and it could be significant over portions of the Red River Valley and SE MB as well as places in NorthEast North Dakota, Northern MN, and NW Ontario. Rain has already made an appearence in parts of Southern Manitoba this evening, and it will continue to spread into the rest of the region tonight likely persisting until early morning before switching over to rain and/or snow for the morning through the day Thursday making things fairly slushy. If precipitation mainly in the form of snow falls tomorrow chances for significant snowfall will likely increase, a north wind will also be present during the timeframe as the low tracks towards Lake Of The Woods. Snowfall amounts will range sharply from 2cm in the Northern Red River Valley to 30+ cm in the SE portion of the province. That means places such as Winnipeg will be left with 5cm at the most. Strong Northerly winds will also be a factor over the timeframe creating hazardous driving conditions. Things are expected to clear out for the day Friday leaving behind sunny skies and cooler than normal temperatures.

Additional Information: Environment Canada issued a Winter Storm Warning Earlier this afternoon for Southeast Manitoba highlighting the potential for significant winter weather and hazardous driving conditions in places over the next 24 hours. The expected heavy wet snow with this system may create stress on powerlines and tree branches possibly resulting in localized power outages in some regions.
