Unsettled weather for the weekend .

Southern Manitoba is Under the influence of a large ridge of high pressure which is stretching across the prairie provinces this weekend. Earlier this week we were awaiting a area of high pressure to slide gradually east across the prairie provinces. That is now centred over northern Manitoba which is allowing a west to south westerly wind into the province. That should be the main weather influence this weekend.

Warm weather expected on Saturday , despite some showers expected in the south east portion of the province . A large ridge of high pressure is moving east (isobars “lines” off to the right ) allowing warm temperatures into the province . For the weekend .

The rest of the day today should be fairly pleasant there appears to be some fairly unstable air through the south west of the red river valley. Some pop up showers and thunderstorms have been occurring in the southwest corner of the province.  A weak area of low pressure will be in place this evening in the southwest regions of Manitoba that will aid in the possibility of further developing showers and thunderstorms in the southwest regions of the province . Your garden variety type thunderstorms however . Temperatures will be in the mid to high teens this evening , 15 in Brandon and 14 in Winnipeg. This evening as a area of low pressure moves east along the border area there will be a chance for showers and thunderstorms to form, they will likely weaken by the time they reach the red river valley this evening.  Winds will be out of the east to northeast this evening .

As we head into the overnight hours , there will be off and on cloud cover as the area of weak low pressure skirts the USA border, overnight lows will drop into the mid to high single digits. 5 to 8C.

Heading into the day Saturday it will be a cloudier day as a area of low pressure gradually moves east into Northwestern Ontario. Showers and possibly a few rumbles of thunder might occur in the Red River Valley towards the southeastern portion of the province . Depending on strength of the rainfall we may get between 5 to 20mm of rain . More rain will fall in the Red River Valley than other portions of the province. As for the Red River Valley area There’s a possibility of 30mm in total if the rainfall does fall heavier than expected . I know you like sunny weather , the good news is that for those in the southwest portion of the province will be missing the showers and more under a mix of sun and cloud . .  Daytime high temperature will be in the 10 to 15 Degree range . For Winnipeg highs will be at 10-12C. For Brandon it will be a much nicer day for you as you’ll miss out on most of the rain, you’ll get a high temperature of 14C.

As we head into Saturday Night expect gradual clearing and clear skies overnight. Overnight lows will drop into the single digits . A low of Plus 5 in Winnipeg, and a low of plus 6 in Brandon. Elsewhere between Plus 7 in and near the border regions or rural areas. Closer to the lakes Lows will be near zero to minus 2. The lakes still have ice covered areas which will contribute to the lower temperatures. The winds overnight will be light out of the west.

The day on Sunday expect increasing clouds winds will shift the south ahead of an area of low pressure that will move into the province in the afternoon hours, showers and off and on rain may Occur as we go into the late afternoon hours. Behind that there will be a chance for heavy showers or weak thunderstorms, before clearing occurs in the evening . When the expected trough moves east into Ontario winds will shift to the west. High temperatures will reach the 10 to 20C degree range . For Winnipeg a high temperature of 16C is expected and Brandon will get a high temperature of 18C.

For Sunday night low temperatures will be much cooler , the bad news is that some areas may experience overnight lows below zero . Especially near the lakes and in southwestern Manitoba . Cloud cover in the southeastern region of the province will hinder temperatures from cooling much . Clear skies may be more likely in the western region of the province, with winds across the southern portion of the province blowing from the west temperatures for the most part will be above zero.  a low of plus 4 for Brandon and a low of 4-7C in Winnipeg.

As we move into the week ahead , expect high temperatures to remain in the mid to high teens (10 to 20C). On Monday beautiful weather expected and sunny skies a high of 18 to 19C for Winnipeg. The beginning of the week looks to remain stable and calm , there may be a low pressure system coming into the province for Tuesday bringing a chance for showers and/or thunderstorms. For the long range looks like the temperatures we started with the middle of the week look to stay . There should be a improvement in temperatures after the day Tuesday with beautiful weather and highs remaining in the mid to high double digits !! Enjoy!
