Unseasonable warmth arriving!

Southern Manitoba has been experiencing some of the warmest weather of the season so far, snow pack has greatly diminished and temperatures have been soaring into the mid to high single digits in some cases, this past week. There has been some areas where temperatures have even reached the 10-15C mark. Why so warm??? A area of high pressure off in eastern Canada has been allowing a warm southerly flow to envelop much of the eastern prairies, this trend looks to continue. Read on to find out how warm things will get this weekend!

Above a snapshot of the warmth expected for Saturday in southern sections of Manitoba. Warmest air appears to be in the southeastern sections. Enjoy!

Friday: Will be another gorgeous day, sunny skies with very little in the way of cloud cover is expected. Winds will be gusting out of the south from 50 to 70km/h.  Temperatures for a majority of the region are expected to soar into the low to mid teens (10 to 14C) for areas along and south of the yellowhead highway north into the southern interlakes region and the eastern sections of Manitoba up to Bissett. Areas north of that will only see high temperatures in the high single digits (7 to 9C). Winnipeg: Sunny, high 12C. Brandon: Sunny, high 14C. Dauphin: Sunny, high 9C.

Friday Night: Much of the region again will be under high pressure, clear skies are forecast into the mid to late evening with increasing cloud overnight with lows only dropping into the low single digits +1 to +4C. A few locations will drop below zero, mainly in the parklands the dauphin region as well as the Brandon area to the Manitoba lakes area. Winnipeg: Clear, increasing cloud overnight. Low +1C. Brandon: Clear early in the evening then cloudy, low 0C.  Dauphin: Cloudy, low +1C.

Saturday: During the day Saturday a warm front will gradually lift itself north into the northern North Dakota region, with a attendant trough off in western Manitoba. In western Manitoba cloudy skies are expected for the majority of the day with a band of rain in the northern parklands region by Dauphin and Swan River which may build far enough south into the Dauphin regions. There may be Periods of sun mixed in, sunny skies are likely in much of southeastern Manitoba. Temperatures will differ widely from the low single digits (1 to 4C) in the interlake regions, to the mid single digits in southwestern Manitoba and the parklands regions (4C to 7C). Areas in the extreme southwest northeast into the southern interlakes and into the nopiming areas will see high temperatures in the low to mid teens (10 to 15C). Winnipeg: Sunny, high 14C. Brandon: Cloudy: High 8C. Dauphin: Cloudy, high 9C.

Saturday Night:An area of low pressure will be skirting along the Saskatchewan border, with another system lifting into northern regions of Manitoba centred in the interlake regions, along with a cold front cutting through the southern half of Manitoba. Unsettled weather is possible in the interlakes, with rain possible there, then areas in the red river valley into southeastern Manitoba as a band of rain moves through the region then into Ontario by morning. Temperatures for the night will only drop below zero in the extreme western portions of Manitoba, (0 to -1C) elsewhere such as the interlakes, red river valley and southeastern, southwestern Manitoba regions temperatures will sit in the mid to high single digits. Winnipeg: Cloudy, rain beginning before morning. Low +4C. Brandon: Cloudy, low +1C. Dauphin: Cloudy low -1C.

Sunday: I’m expecting a chance for showers to continue in areas of eastern Manitoba as the cold front takes a while to leave the province, skies should clear come the afternoon hours. Cooler drier air will filter in as a result , with areas of southwestern Manitoba and the interlakes seeing the coldest of that air sitting only in the mid single digits (3 to 7C). Areas of southeastern Manitoba will see highs in the low teens to mid teens, (10 to 14C). Winnipeg: Sunny, high 10C. Brandon: Sunny, High 5C. Dauphin: Sunny, high 3C.

Sunday Night: A area of high pressure will be sitting south of the region and as a result clear skies are expected. I’m expecting a colder night than what we’re used to. Temperatures in the low minus single digits (-2 to -8C) will settle in overnight on Sunday, with the coldest temperatures right over the Manitoba lakes. Winnipeg: Clear, low -3C. Brandon: Clear, low -4C. Dauphin: clear low -3C.

Early next week: Indications are that the trend of temperatures in the low teens , will end and a possibility of temperatures in the mid to high single digits will come back as cool air filters in behind a large low pressure system in eastern Canada .
